El Salvador: Alianza FC handed one-year stadium ban after stampede that left 12 dead and hundreds injured

A football club in El Salvador have been fined and hit by a 12-month stadium ban after 12 people died in a stampede that left hundreds more injured.

Alianza FC were hosting Club Deportivo FAS in the second leg of their Primera Division play-off tie at the 44,836-capacity Estadio Cuscatlan in the capital San Salvador on Saturday when tragedy struck.

12 people were killed in the crush and hundreds more needed medical treatment after a stampede broke out during the game.

President of El Salvador Nayib Bukele described the tragic incident as “unprecedented” and said that an “exhaustive investigation” would be launched.

The Salvadoran Football Federation have now fined Alianza FC $30,000 (£24,194) - with a July 21 deadline to pay - and handed them a stadium suspension that is set to see them play matches behind closed doors for the next 12 months.

Saturday’s match was suspended after the stampede and Deportivo FAS have since been handed a 2-0 victory.
