One man has been killed and another three wounded in a mass shooting in a shopping mall in El Paso, Texas, which has rocked a community still scarred from the last massacre three years ago.
Gunfire erupted at around 5pm in the food court of the Cielo Vista Mall, causing terrified shoppers and workers to flee and barricade themselves inside stores.
El Paso Police said officers responded to the scene and two suspects, both males, were arrested.
The first suspect was apprehended within minutes by a heroic off-duty law enforcement officer who rushed toward the gunfire and took down the accused gunman.
The circumstances of the second suspect’s arrest are unclear.
The identities of the victims and suspects have not been released and the motive remains unclear but Interim Police Chief Peter Pacillas reassured the public that “there is no more danger”.
The Cielo Vista Mall is located adjacent to the Walmart store where 23 people were killed in a racially-motivated mass shooting in August 2019.
Several mall workers who survived that massacre have said Wednesday’s incident brought up “bad memories” as they found themselves in the midst of a second mass shooting in the same spot.
