NEW DELHI: Bayern Munich's unbeaten run in the Bundesliga came to a shocking end as they suffered a 5-1 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt, opening the door for Bayer Leverkusen to extend their lead at the top of the table to six points.
In a dramatic match in Frankfurt, the hosts dominated the first half, securing a remarkable 3-0 lead with goals from Omar Marmoush, Junior Dina Ebimbe, and Hugo Larsson. Bayern's Joshua Kimmich pulled one back just before halftime, but Frankfurt's Ebimbe scored again, capitalising on a counter-attack and exploiting a mistake by Dayot Upamecano to make it 4-1.
Ansgar Knauff sealed the emphatic victory with a fifth goal, making Frankfurt the first team to score five goals against Bayern in the first 60 minutes of a league game since 1975.
With this defeat, Bayern Munich has handed Bayer Leverkusen an opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga. Leverkusen will face Stuttgart on Sunday in a crucial match that could see them open up a significant gap in the title race.
Meanwhile, Union Berlin celebrated their first win since August 26 under new coach Nenad Bjelica, defeating Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1. The victory lifted Union Berlin to 15th place in the Bundesliga standings.
Werder Bremen halted a four-game winless streak with a 2-0 victory over Augsburg, courtesy of goals from Niklas Stark and Marvin Ducksch. In a clash of newly-promoted teams, Heidenheim secured a 3-2 win against Darmstadt, leaving the latter winless in seven Bundesliga games.
Freiburg claimed a narrow 1-0 victory against Wolfsburg, setting the stage for the headline clash between Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig later in the day.
