Eid Al-Adha 2026 date: Is Bakrid on May 27 Or 28? What changed after moon not sighted

Eid al-Adha, also known as Bakrid, will now be celebrated across most parts of India on Thursday, May 28, after religious bodies confirmed that the Dhul-Hijjah crescent moon was not sighted earlier this week.

The update led several institutions, courts and state governments to revise their holiday schedules, shifting the public holiday from May 27 to May 28.

However, Jammu and Kashmir will continue to observe the festival on May 27 based on local moon sighting traditions.

Is Bakrid 2026 On May 27 Or May 28?

For most states in India, Bakrid will be observed on May 28, 2026.

But in Jammu and Kashmir, the festival will be celebrated on May 27 following announcements by local religious authorities.

The difference comes from regional moon sighting practices followed in different parts of the country.

Why Was The Bakrid Holiday Date Changed?

The holiday was revised after religious bodies announced that the crescent moon marking the beginning of Dhul-Hijjah had not been sighted.

Following this, multiple institutions updated their schedules.

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) announced that Central Government offices in Delhi and New Delhi would remain closed on May 28 instead of May 27.

The Supreme Court also revised its holiday calendar. The court said it would function normally on May 27, while cases earlier scheduled for May 28 would now be taken up a day earlier.

Which States Shifted The Eid Holiday To May 28?

States including Andhra Pradesh and Telangana shifted the Bakrid holiday to May 28 after moon sighting announcements confirmed the new festival date.

The Telangana-based Sadar Majlis-e-Ulama-e-Deccan announced that Eid al-Adha would fall on May 28 after Dhul-Qa'dah completed 30 days.

In Andhra Pradesh, the government also postponed Intermediate Public Advanced Supplementary Examinations that were earlier scheduled for May 28.

In a notification, the General Administration Department said that May 27 had already been declared a holiday for Bakrid, the ‘festival of sacrifice’.

"Since 'Id-Ul-Ad'ha' (Bakrid) is being celebrated in the state on May 28, the government is pleased to order that Thursday, May 28, 2026, will also be a holiday...," the notification said.

West Bengal declared 28th May, 2026 (Thursday) as a public holiday on account of Id-Ud-Zoha (Bakrid).” The government also cancelled the previously announced holidays on May 26 and May 27.

The Board of Intermediate Education rescheduled the affected exams to June 5 and June 12.

Will Stock Markets Remain Closed On Bakrid 2026, May 27 or May 28?

Yes. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) had already listed May 28 as a market holiday for Eid al-Adha.

Trading will remain suspended on Thursday, May 28.

Why Is Jammu And Kashmir Celebrating Bakrid on May 27?

While most parts of India will observe Eid al-Adha on May 28, Jammu and Kashmir will celebrate the festival on May 27.

The decision follows regional moon sighting traditions and announcements made by local religious authorities in the Union Territory.
