Egypt call for Fifa investigation into ‘blatant errors’ by referee in Argentina loss

  • The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has lodged an official complaint with Fifa , demanding the exclusion of French referee Francois Letexier and his team from the World Cup following their controversial 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the last-16.
  • Egypt, who were leading 2-0, had a goal controversially disallowed and protested a perceived foul in the build-up to Enzo Fernandez’s winning goal, which secured Argentina's late comeback.
  • The EFA's complaint highlights "serious refereeing mistakes”, "double standards”, and a "failure to make appropriate use of VAR," alleging "blatant errors" and "discrimination against the Egyptian national team”, as they called for a Fifa investigation.
  • Mostafa Ziko, an Egyptian goalscorer, publicly accused the World Cup of being "fixed" and "directed towards Argentina," while manager Hossam Hassan declared he would "never watch the World Cup again" due to a lack of justice.
  • The EFA stated its commitment to upholding the national team's rights and pursuing all regulatory measures to ensure justice and the integrity of the competition, as Argentina prepares to face Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
