EFL makes decision on Manchester United's second goal after Marcus Rashford claims it

Marcus Rashford has been awarded Manchester United’s second goal in the 2-0 Carabao Cup final win over Newcastle.

The striker’s shot on 39 minutes deflected off the outstretched leg of Sven Botman which saw the ball loop over Magpies debutant Loris Karius to give the Reds a two-goal cushion after Casemiro’s header six minutes earlier.

The effort had initially been ruled as a Botman own goal, denying Rashford his 25th goal of the season. The United hero declared with a smile after the match that he’d be claiming it anyway, but he now has his goal officially confirmed by the EFL.

The decision means Wout Weghorst claims his second assist for the club after sliding the ball through to the on-rushing Rashford in the build-up. It also means the goal scorer netted six goals in six outings in the competition and managed to convert in each round.

Rashford has now scored 17 goals in his 19 games since the World Cup and is on course to become the first United star to break the 30-goal barrier since Robin van Persie in the 2012/13 campaign.

Speaking after the Carabao Cup final win at Wembley, Rashford told Sky Sports: "It's a mixture of all the emotions. It's massive for us to be involved in these types of games and it's something we've missed as a club.

"The fact we've come all this way and won it, it's a massive feeling. Hopefully it pushes us now to keep going. There's hunger to add more finals like this. I've been in finals where we've won and lost. It's massive for us as a club and individuals and it's part of our history. We want to keep adding to that."
