The EFL is set for a significant leadership transition, with chief executive Trevor Birch announcing his decision to step down at the conclusion of the 2026-27 season.
Birch, a seasoned football administrator who has held senior roles at clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United, and Swansea City, informed the league’s board on Friday of his intention to depart.
He assumed the chief executive position in January 2021.
Reflecting on his time at the helm, Birch stated: "It has been a privilege to serve as chief executive of the EFL.
“With one more season ahead, my focus is on supporting the league, our clubs and colleagues, and ensuring a smooth and orderly transition to new leadership."
The announcement follows the re-election of Rick Parry as EFL chair for a further three-year term at the league’s annual general meeting.
Commenting on Birch’s impending exit, Parry praised his contribution, saying: "Trevor has led the EFL with clarity and commitment during an important period for the league.
“The board is thankful for his contribution and fully supports the approach being taken to ensure an orderly handover and continued stability in the 12 months ahead."
