EFL chief delivers update on VAR being used in the Championship

EFL Chairman Rick Parry is "excited" by the prospect of VAR being introduced into the Championship.

Video assistant referees have been used in the Premier League since 2019/20 to overturn clear and obvious errors by officials, and a crew at Stockley Park will help oversee Sunday's Championship play-off final.

The costs of the system have been deemed prohibitive for use in the regular season in the second tier, however, the EFL has been investigating "VAR light" options in a bid to reduce the number of high-profile mistakes from referees.

Cheaper VAR options would not feature the offside technology used in the Premier League, and there would be fewer camera angles for video officials to use.

Should the EFL settle on a proposal, support from clubs plus FIFA approval would be required.

But Parry believes the options under consideration would help improve the accuracy of big decisions made by officials in the Championship.

“There are systems in place now that look genuinely quite exciting,” he told The Times. "If you look at the PGMOL statistics there is a clear gap now between the accuracy with VAR and the accuracy without and you probably can’t get beyond 90 per cent accuracy without.

“I think it’s just common sense that if we want to achieve a significant lift upwards then the only way to do that is with technology.”
