Edu sent Dusan Vlahovic transfer message following Arsenal's Carabao Cup loss to Liverpool

Arsenal icon Paul Merson has urged his old side to sign a centre-forward following their 2-0 loss to Liverpool in Thursday night's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.

The Gunners were defeated by two Diogo Jota goals as Thomas Partey received a late red card in what was an extremely disappointing night at the Emirates Stadium.

And Merson told the north Londoners that they need a top-quality striker if they want to compete with the likes of Jurgen Klopp's side.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: "They need a striker and they’re not making millions of chances so they need someone who’s going to be putting the ball in the back of the net.

"Until they get a centre-forward who’s going to get them 20, 25, goals a season and then we’re talking again.

"They’ve had your [Thierry] Henry's, Ian Wright's, people like that - they need a top centre-forward. You very rarely win anything without a centre forward."

The north Londoners have been linked with Dusan Vlahovic in recent times and football.london understands that they are pushing to try and bring the Fiorentina frontman to the club this month.

However, it will likely be a difficult deal to pull off in this window given there are just 10 days left until deadline day as technical director Edu looks to bolster Mikel Arteta's squad in an attempt to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League.

Fellow forwards Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are both into the final six months of their contracts with the club and the former missed a glorious chance to score when the Reds were 1-0 up.

Belgian midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga played a glorious lofted pass over Liverpool's defence but Lacazette snatched at the chance, firing over the bar in what was the Gunners' best chance of the match.
