Edu's £45m Arsenal masterstroke gives Mikel Arteta Premier League edge with top five ranking

Gabriel Jesus has been sensational since making the summer switch to Arsenal from Manchester City in the transfer window. The Gunners were screaming out for a top-quality striker at the back end of last season and it seems they have found that in the Brazilian.

Jesus has had an excellent start to the season under Mikel Arteta scoring two goals in his last game against Leicester. This form is after an impressive pre-season where he scored seven goals in five matches.

It is clear that Jesus will become one of Arsenal’s most iconic strikers if he continues on this trajectory. His incredible statistics also highlight that he is on his way to becoming a Premier League great.

So far in the Premier League this season, according to Squawka, Jesus has the highest xG in the division alongside the most goals and assists, the most touches in the opposition box, and the most take-ons completed. The Brazilian has been completely dominant in his opening matches as an Arsenal player.

However, the statistic that gives him the keys to becoming an iconic Premier League striker is the fact that he ranks fifth in Premier League history for goal involvement per minute without a penalty. Jesus contributes to a goal every 107.6 minutes via Orbinho.

Only Thierry Henry, Sergio Aguero, Mohamed Salah, and Luiz Suarez rank higher than the new Arsenal striker, which highlights that he is in very good company.

Throughout last season the Gunners were screaming for a striker who had a presence in the box, with Alexandre Lacazette unable to find the net from open play on a consistent basis. Eddie Nketiah certainly offered more of an attacking presence when he was chosen ahead of Lacazette towards the end of the season but still did not have a dominant impact like Jesus is promised to bring to the team.

Arsenal desperately lacked a forward presence throughout the stages of last season, which is a major reason why the Gunners missed out on a place in the Champions League. However, Jesus’ scoring record highlights that he could be the key difference for the north London side to qualify for the European elite competition this season.

Jesus became Mikel Arteta’s first-ever striker signing since taking over as the Arsenal boss from Unai Emery in December 2019. And the signing has already shown signs to be one of the best under the Spaniard when you consider the forward’s impressive statistics.

If the 25-year-old continues this impressive scoring trajectory not only will he prove to help guide Arsenal back amongst Europe’s elite, but he will also deserve to be labelled an iconic Premier League striker due to his exceptional goal statistics.
