Arsenal could solve their midfield problems by taking advantage of Maxence Caqueret’s contract situation at Lyon and pursuing a deal for him in the summer window.
According to French outlet Footmercato, The Ligue 1 side have reached a stumbling block to renew the Frenchman’s contract, with his current deal set to expire in 2023.
The source goes on to say that the French side are not willing to meet his wage demands, which shouldn’t be a problem for Arsenal considering the mass exodus of players in the most recent January transfer window.
The Gunners have previously linked to the midfielder and his contract situation has opened up the perfect opportunity to sign him.
The Gunners will be in desperate need of a midfielder in the summer window, as Football.london understands that Roma are expected to make a fresh attempt to sign Granit Xhaka at the end of the season.
This will mean that Thomas Partey would be the only experienced midfielder in the team, as Mohamed Elneny’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
Albert Sambi Lokonga and Charlie Patino are the other midfielders at the club, however, they both need time to adapt to the Premier League, and they shouldn’t be burdened with such a huge responsibility
Mikel Arteta has had problems with the midfield this season due to the lack of quality in squad depth, and that has hindered the club’s progress at times.
If the Spaniard opts for three players in the centre of midfield then Caqueret would be an excellent option to have on the right-hand side for the future, and he could even feature in the number six role.
Arsenal have attempted to sign midfielders from Lyon in the past in Bruno Guimaraes and Houssem Aouar. But they have both failed in their pursuits which led to a lot of disappointment amongst the fan base
So, if the club does pursue a deal for Caqueret, then Edu must ensure that the club avoids embarrassment for the third time.
The midfielder is a French youth international and is a regular in Lyon’s midfielder having also played a part in the Champions League campaigns in previous seasons.
If his contract situation means that the Gunners can sign him for a cut-price deal, then it is certainly a transfer that Edu should look to explore in order to increase Arteta’s midfield options.
