Edith Bowman claims she was 'edged out' of Radio 1 before axing

Edith Bowman has claimed she was 'edged out' of Radio 1 prior to her axing and felt 'incredibly let down' by station bosses.

Speaking to Psychologies magazine, the Scottish radio host detailed how in 2009 she was moved from her Radio 1 afternoon slot to Weekend Breakfast.

The 48 year-old said the decision to give her a quieter slot left her "speechless", as Radio 1 cancelled her afternoon show, which "absolutely floored" her.

As reported in the Mirror, she said: "Lies and deceit are extremely strong words, but the discussions I'd been having with my boss at the time about my future were very far from what I was being told in the meeting.

"The conversation was the opposite of what I was expecting and it absolutely floored me. So I just felt incredibly let down because I'd given everything I had.

"At the time I was too speechless and upset about it."

After being moved to the weekend slot, the mum-of-two was replaced and moved to Tuesday night's The Review Show in 2012.

Bowman was then axed from the station completely in 2014. She has since gone on to host a weekend morning show on BBC 6 Music, as well as her own podcast, "Friends will be Friends" with fellow presenter pal Cat Deeley.

Edith said she would "be more honest" about how she felt if the incident were to happen again, adding: "I would ask what had changed from the conversations we'd had up to that point.

"I knew that I was being edged out by Radio 1, but The Review Show ended up being one of the most joyous experiences I had in my time there."

She said she believes bosses saw the move as a demotion, but it ended up being exactly what she had been looking for. Edith said she was then able to leave the station "on a high".

Radio 1 has told The Mirror: "As we said at the time, Edith was one of a number of departures announced in June 2014 to enable Radio 1 & 1Xtra to deliver some of the savings they were being asked to make as part of the wider BBC’s financial challenges following the Licence Fee settlement."
