Edinson Cavani left in transfer limbo as trio 'give up' on signing Man Utd star

Edinson Cavani's potential move to Brazil could be off as he gets set to look for a new club in the summer when his contract runs out at Manchester United.

The 35-year-old joined the Red Devils in October 2020 after a successful seven-year spell at Paris Saint-Germain, where he won Ligue 1 titles and scored 200 goals in 301 appearances. Cavani reportedly rejected moves back to South America in order to sign for United.

He brought plenty of experience to the Red Devils' front line as they went on to finish second in the Premier League with Cavani netting 17 times in all competitions. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial would often play either side of the Uruguayan when fit, with Bruno Fernandes in behind.

It was a formula that worked and persuaded Cavani to stay at United for another season. However, the striker has struggled with injuries and regular game time since, playing just 13 league games in 2020/21.

The signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus has also limited Cavani's minutes, with the former Real Madrid ace starting the majority of matches as the lone forward. He has scored 24 times in all competitions which hasn't helped Cavani's cause and his pursuit for more game time.

With Cavani's contract up in the summer, he is certainly going to looking for the next step in his career. Reports suggested that he was willing to move closer to home nation Uruguay and a switch to Brazil looked the most likely destination.

However, Cavani has now been linked with moves to Spain and Argentina - all but ending a transfer to Brazil. Journalist Jorge Nicola revealed his potential move to the land of samba is highly unlikely at this point.

This is because the three clubs who expressed an interest have recently given up on their chase. As per Sport Witness, Botafogo didn't receive a response from his agent, while Palmeiras considered his demands to be too big. Corinthians were the final side keen to sign the experienced striker, but won’t be able to afford him due to an issue with their sponsors. They were sponsored by Mercado Bitcoin for the 2021/22 season.

Despite the unlikely moves to Brazil, it is understood Cavani's future 'shouldn't' lie in Uruguay too. Boca Juniors have been linked with the player but are struggling financially and have just spent big-money on Dario Benedetto. This could see Cavani stay in Europe, with a whole host of La Liga sides keen to capture his signature. Real Sociedad and Villarreal have been tipped to sign him in the summer.
