Edinburgh youths caught on CCTV vandalising recently opened sports centre

Two Edinburgh youths have been caught on CCTV vandalising one of the city's top sports facilities.

Staff at the Meadowbank Sports Centre arrived to work on Tuesday morning to find one of the windows smashed. Police are now handling the incident involving two young boys.

This comes during the first week of Easter break for high schools in Edinburgh, with children off until April 15. The sports centre reopened the public in July last year.

An Edinburgh Leisure spokesperson said: “Meadowbank was subject to an act of vandalism last night from two young boys, with a window in our indoor athletics smashed.

“For the safety of our customers, the area was immediately secured, and repairs are being organised. We apologise to all our customers for the inconvenience caused by the mindless and pointless acts of a few individuals.

"The incident was caught on CCTV and the offence is now in the hands of the police.”

A local resident who saw the window on Tuesday morning told us: "I was just on my way to the gym when I noticed the path was cordoned off with railings and cones.

"I was just about to walk the other way thinking it was some sort of maintenance job when I noticed one full panel of glass at the front was completely shattered. There was no evidence of what caused it but if it was vandals then it would be a huge shame considering the facility has only recently opened and has been a welcomed addition to the Meadowbank area."
