Edinburgh woman wins cash prize for picking up litter from city streets

An Edinburgh resident has won a cash prize by picking up litter on the street due to a lottery app.

Maria Clorinda Catherine Luck scooped £250 after simply picking up rubbish. She won big through the partnership of Keep Scotland Beautiful and Litterlotto.

Keep Scotland Beautiful is a charity that specialises in preserving Scotland’s nature. They do this by combatting climate change, tackling litter and waste, and restoring nature and biodiversity.

Litterlotto is an app which allows you to receive weekly prizes ranging from £50 to £500, all by picking up litter and registering what you have picked on your phone.

Maria loves to listen to podcasts and pick litter to pass the time. She expressed her disgust at the state of litter in Edinburgh: “There’s far too much. Edinburgh is awash with litter, especially in road verges.”

Many people up and down the nation would agree with Maria. According to a survey by the environmental charity, 87 percent of Scots believe that litter is an issue across Scotland, and two thirds believe that litter is an issue in their local area.

Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Deputy-Chief Executive, Catherine Gee stated how proud she is with the collaboration: “This collaboration is all about encouraging people to help tackle the country’s litter emergency and its brilliant to see people across the country getting involved. I’m looking forward to seeing many more Scottish winners benefitting from helping to keep Scotland beautiful.”

Carly Di Crescienzo, Local Authority Campaigns Manager at Litterlotto showed how keen she is on getting more and more people to use the system: “It’s great to see our Scottish users benefitting from this regional jackpot.”

“We hope that our partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful will encourage others to get involved.”
