Edinburgh woman rushed to hospital after being struck on head by falling tree branch

A 23-year-old Edinburgh woman was rushed to hospital this afternoon (March 28) after being struck on the head by a falling tree branch in a busy part of the city centre.

The incident took place at The Mound, just off Princes Street, this morning around 8:40am after a lorry struck the branch and caused it to overhang from the road. The branch was then hit by an oncoming bus and fell to the ground, hitting the woman who was passing by.

In the astonishing turn of events, the woman was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for medical attention after suffering a head injury, with Police confirming that enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were called around 8.40am on Monday, 28 March, to a report of a crash on The Mound, Edinburgh.

"A large branch was struck by a lorry, causing it to overhang the road. The branch was then struck by a bus and fell to the ground, hitting a person walking past.

"The pedestrian, a 23-year-old woman, sustained a head injury and was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."

Lothian Buses also confirmed that they were involved in the incident this morning and that they too are assisting Police Scotland with their investigation.

While confirming that the lorry in question initially struck the tree causing the branch to fall into the path of the bus, they also noted that no action against their driver or company will be taken.

A Spokesperson for Lothian Buses added: "We can confirm that one of our buses was caught up in an incident on the Mound this morning and we have assisted Police Scotland with their investigation. Our thoughts are with the pedestrian involved."

The City of Edinburgh Council also added that their parks team inspected the tree and the branch has now been cleared.
