Edinburgh woman feels 'disturbed' after catching suspicious prowlers on CCTV

An Edinburgh woman has been left "disturbed" after she spotted two suspicious men on her CCTV in the middle of the night.

Rosie, 45, from Portobello was woken up in the small hours of Wednesday morning when her phone - linked to her Ring Doorbell - alerted her to someone outside her home.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, she said: "I got a motion alert at around 2.30am and when I checked my phone, I saw two white male men approach my door from the street. I have a gate that leads down from the street, and another by the side too. So they have to make an effort to enter the gate to get to the property.

"When I looked at the camera, they were both wearing caps, one looked like he was keeping an eye out, and the other one came right up to the camera. It looked like he was trying to scope out if there was an easy route to the building."

Rosie felt even more distressed over the fact that her elderly neighbour also lives in the apartment above on her own too.

She added: "My neighbour is an 82-year-old woman, and she lives on her own and so do I, so that's two single women. It's just disturbing that there were individuals prowling around my house in the early hours."

Later that morning, she phoned 101 and praised the police for being "really responsive."

She added: "It does reassure me, and they've told me that if it happens again to phone 999. I also think having those camera doorbells when you live alone is beneficial.

"But it's that thought of someone being so near you when you're asleep, even if they are outside, it's still scary. And I'd be concerned about them trying to get into my upstairs neighbour's home too."

Rosie added that she wants to raise awareness of these situations for people in Portobello.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police received a report of two males acting suspiciously at a property in Morton Street, Edinburgh around 2.25am on Wednesday, 7 June 2023. Enquiries are ongoing."
