Edinburgh weather: When will the heatwave end as amber warning issued to Borders and Midlothian

Edinburgh's temperatures are set to soar as a red weather warning has been issued to parts of the UK, with an amber warning in place for the Borders and west of Scotland.

Although Edinburgh will be dodging the extreme weather, the Met Office has issued the red weather warning for parts of the UK and an amber warning for the north of the UK, reaching the Borders and parts of Midlothian for Monday July 18 and Tuesday 19. The 'extreme heat' warning comes as parts of Western Europe experience an extreme heatwave, sparking forest fires in Portugal and Spain.

The amber weather warning is in place from 12am on Monday night to midnight on Tuesday. Affected areas include Peebles, Kelso, Biggar and Lanark.

The Met Office warn: "A hot spell is likely to develop from Sunday, likely peaking early next week, leading to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure.

"An increased chance that some heat-sensitive systems and equipment may fail, potentially leading to localised power cuts and the loss of other services to some homes and businesses."

The add: "Some delays to road, rail and air travel are possible, with potential for welfare issues for those who experience prolonged delays."

Meanwhile, Edinburgh is expected to reach 25C on Monday and 27C on Tuesday. For Sunday to Tuesday, the Met Office forecasts: "Mostly dry and increasingly sunny. Afternoon highest lifting day by day, particularly across southern areas, with some chance of breaking all time temperature record towards the border Tuesday."

However, the intense heat is expected to drop by Wednesday, when it will fall to 19C in the capital, with the weather forecasters adding: "Much of the UK should then see temperatures steadily decrease back down to average or slightly above average through the middle part of next week, which could be accompanied by a period of heavy rain and thunderstorms."
