Edinburgh weather: City set for thunderstorms as heatwave brings disruptive skies

Edinburgh is set for some disruptive weather next week, as the dry heat of the weekend sparks thundery showers in the coming days.

This weekend in the capital will see highs of 21C and sunny skies by Saturday, June 10 - with rain appearing on Sunday alongside a humid heat.

Saturday will see the sun rise high in the sky by 9am and stay for the entire day, rising to 19C and showing little to no chance of rain or cloud, according to BBC Weather.

Clouds will eventually appear by early morning on Sunday, June 11, as light rain will arrive by 7am that same morning. The light showers will turn to drizzle by 12pm on June 11, with the sun peaking through the clouds at 2pm.

Highs of 21C will show the peak of the heat by 3pm on the Sunday, with the rain eventually easing off by 6pm that night. The sun will stand alone in the sky for the first time that day by 9pm, with temperatures still sitting at a humid 17C.

The weather will take a disruptive turn by Monday, June 12, as the temperatures stay high but thundery showers are expected in the afternoon.

Edinburgh will reach temperatures of 21C by 1pm on Monday, but the thunder and lightning will arrive shortly after at 2pm.

The light rain and winds will continue after the thunderstorm ends by 4pm, and the cloud will remain for longer until 6pm.

By Wednesday next week, the temperatures will hit 22C and the sun will be the focal point, with cloud coming and going throughout the rest of next week.

Read on below for an in-depth look into the forecast for the coming days in Edinburgh, and a long-range forecast for the rest of June.

Today's forecast

Today, northern and eastern areas will see patchy cloud and sunny spells. Elsewhere, it will be a largely sunny day once early cloud disperses. It will remain mostly dry.

Tonight's forecast

Tonight, western areas will continue to be dry and mostly clear. Elsewhere, it will also be dry but with partly cloudy skies. Cloudier but dry across the Northern Isles. Gentle winds.

Tomorrow's forecast

Tomorrow morning, areas of cloud will affect parts of the east but these will soon dissipate to leave a dry and fine day with lengthy clear spells. However, the Northern Isles will see variable cloud.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday

Sunny through Saturday, however, heavy showers will sweep in towards the evening and overnight into Sunday. Variable cloud and further showers move in for western and southern areas on Sunday, these heavy and thundery in places.

Staying slightly drier and brighter to the north-east. Partly cloudy on Monday but heavy and thundery showers towards the north-east in the afternoon.

Long-range forecast for Edinburgh from June 12 until June 21

With a change of type taking place over the preceding weekend, the week is likely to start on a fairly cloudy but widely warm note, in places hot and humid, with a risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms.

As the week progresses, this risk is likely to diminish, with the focus of these and the warmer weather also probably moving westwards with cooler, drier conditions resuming across eastern areas.

By the end of the period, similar conditions to the present are most probable, with west and north-western areas seeing the best of the sunshine and warmth, whilst eastern areas are likely to be a bit cooler.

Showers and thunderstorms may return to southern areas. Temperatures are expected to be well above average for most, with overnight minima particularly warm.
