Edinburgh to host historic steam train as Royal Scot touring country over weekend

A historic steam train is set to depart from Edinburgh on Sunday after a special journey across the Scotland.

Steam locomotive 46100, known as the 'Royal Scot', was built in 1927 and was one of the fastest trains at the time.

On Sunday, June 19, the train will depart from Edinburgh's Waverley Station at 9.15am, travelling through East Lothian towns Prestonpans and Dunbar, before making its way to the newly-opened Reston station in the Borders, and into England.

The historic train will also be present in the capital on Friday, June 17, as part of its Steam Dreams excursion, setting off from Waverley at midday and 6pm, travelling past Haymarket, Fife and Dunfermline.

Train-spotters in the Edinburgh area could be in for a treat, with the steam locomotive expected to be visible on the city's railway line throughout the weekend.

The 46100 was the first in a new breed of steam locomotives built by the LMS for their fastest passenger services from London to Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow.

The train was chosen to represent Britain at the 1933 'Century of Progress' exhibition in the US, as well as a full rake of carriages being shipped and appearing only only at the exhibition, but also touring the USA and Canada, as well as the Rocky Mountains.

Royal Scot was rebuilt by British Railways in 1950 and went on to serve another 12 years in traffic on the West Coast Main Line.
