Engineers who are now on site have advised that due to the location of the defect, a line closure will be required for this repair, which will be organised after the last train on Saturday night with work scheduled to take place overnight and into Sunday morning.
The train service warned that unfortunately, services across the Forth Bridge will be severely disrupted throughout Saturday. Passengers travelling here should check contingency plans with their train operator directly.
ScotRail have advised that customers should consider alternative travel where possible as services are already stretched due to issues with the Forth Bridge and the rugby at Murrayfield being on.
This will affect all services that cross the bridge including services from ScotRail, LNER, Cross Country, and the Caledonian Sleeper.
ScotRail has since confirmed that they have ticket acceptance in place with Stagecoach East buses for the Fife Circle & between Inverkeithing & Dundee in both directions for customers affected.
They have also arranged for rail tickets to be accepted on a number of local bus routes across Fife.
The train service also warned today will be especially busy due to the rugby.
