Edinburgh to be hit with thunderstorms as Met Office puts warning in place

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the capital for thunderstorms, with downpours set to begin Wednesday afternoon.

The warning is in place from 1pm on May 10 until 8pm on Wednesday night with possible travel delays predicted and advice only travel if necessary.

The forecast advises that it will be a cloudy morning with outbreaks of rain before brightening up in the afternoon with a few heavy showers breaking out.

The Met Office warns: "While some places stay dry, hit-and-miss thunderstorms will develop Sunday and Sunday night, and may bring disruption in places.

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost."

Thursday is set to be cloudy with bright spells and mainly dry at first. A few showers may build from late morning becoming scattered and heavy in the afternoon with maximum temperatures of 17 °C.

It will be cloudy at first on Friday morning before becoming drier and brighter. The weekend will continue dry and bright but with cloud and patchy rain coming in on Sunday morning.
