Edinburgh thief caught on CCTV stealing family heirloom on busy street

A bold Edinburgh thief was filmed stealing a mans belongings from a van on Leith Walk.

The man, who stole a bag and jacket, was caught on CCTV opening the van and walking away with the items. The footage shows him heading down a lane beside the Tesco Express on Brunswick Road.

The incident took place just after 7.30am on February 23. John Calderwood, the victim of the theft, says there's only one possession he cares about getting back - a family heirloom that once belonged to his father.

The heirloom, a coin, can't be replaced - and while John said that while it may not be worth a lot of money, it's incredibly important to him. Police have confirmed enquires are ongoing to find the culprit.

John told Edinburgh Live : "I deliver to Tesco on Leith Walk through my work a lot, and on this day I got out my truck and walked round without locking the door.

"I would usually lock it every time, and this is the one time I didn't. The guy then went round, as you see in the video, and grabbed my jacket and bag.

"There's two wee lanes beside Tesco and he went down one, it's all on the CCTV. I got a hold of the police right away, and the thief got nothing because I cancelled all my cards.

"Some documents with my name and address were found in a bin on Pilrig Street, so they were smart about it."

John told us that the one thing he wants back, the coin, has been in his wallet for over two decades. He said: "My dad died 21 years ago.

"I've had that coin of his in my wallet since then. The rest was cards and stuff that I can easily replace, but there's no way of replacing something like that.

"It's all I want back, and I'm happy to pay a reward."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of the theft of items from a vehicle on Shrub Place, Edinburgh, around 8am on Thursday, 23 February, 2023.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
