Edinburgh student can't visit ill mum after his passport is stolen at bus stop

A Syrian Heriot Watt graduate has issued a desperate plea to have a bag containing his laptop, passport, notebook and important documents returned to him.

Abdul Kader Masri, 42, was planning on travelling into town when he left his bag at a bus stop on South Gyle Access for ten minutes at around 5.25am on the morning of May 8.

Abdul, who recently completed a post doctorate at the capital university, says that he checked his phone and found that there was no number 22 travelling into the city centre at that time so he had headed to the nearby tram stop instead.

But when he arrived at the tram stop he discovered he had left his valuable bag containing his laptop, Syrian passport, notebook and important documents in it.

He ran back to find that the bag had disappeared - he says that he could only have left it at the stop for around ten minutes.

Abdul says that he needs his passport returned as a matter of urgency as his mother is sick and he may be required to travel back to Homs at short notice in the near future.

Getting a new passport could take months, he says.

The graduate is also reliant on his laptop to find work having recently left university and he is worried that he is now left without means to secure employment in Edinburgh.

“I lost it on May 8 at around 5.25am at the bus stop on South Gyle Access just outside of Forrester High School”, he said.

“I had been waiting on a 22 bus to go into town but there were none running at that time so I headed to the tram stop at the top of the road.

“Unfortunately I did not realise I had left my bag with my laptop, passport and important documents inside.

“I ran back but could not find it - I must have left it for only ten minutes.

“My mum is sick at the moment and I need my passport to go back to visit her - it could take months for me to be able to apply for a new one so I could be unable to travel back home.

“I also desperately need my laptop as that is how I am looking for work having completed my post doctorate recently.

“I’m willing to offer a cash reward for anyone that would be able to reunite me with my lost possessions.”

Abdul has asked for anyone with information on the whereabouts of his belongings to contact him at: masriabdul81@gmail.com

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
