Edinburgh skaters play lively game of ice hockey on frozen pond

A pair of Edinburgh skaters were seen making the most of the cold weather last week as they enjoyed a game of ice hockey in Inverleith Park.

With the city reaching temperatures as low as minus eight degrees, the two individuals were caught on video at sunrise as they gilded over the pond, which is only a few feet deep.

Bringing hockey sticks along with them, the pair had been part of a very picturesque scene as they played, with the park almost entirely empty.

Posted by user @stuffrobmade, the Christmas-card-like scene quickly gained nearly 1,000 views, however the game had gone against guidance from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to avoid frozen lakes and ponds.

Speaking in a release last week, the fire service urged locals to avoid the ice, however if someone does get into difficulty, to phone 999 and avoid trying to rescue them yourself.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Area Commander for Prevention and Protection, David Dourley, said: “Following the tragic events of the weekend, our thoughts are very much with the families, friends and local communities at this sad time.

“We strongly urge everyone to please be aware of the dangers of frozen water. We know the ice can look inviting but do not be tempted to walk on ice. It can easily crack and cause a person to fall through.

“Don’t wander too near to the edge, icy conditions could cause you to slip and fall in and don’t be tempted to test how solid the water is.

“Adults should set a good example by staying off the ice and we also ask that parents, carers and guardians ensure children are aware of the dangers of frozen water.

“We don’t want your winter walk to end in tragedy so please avoid going near frozen water when you are out with loved ones and pets.”
