Edinburgh school closes after pupil, 17, dies on grounds as probe into incident launched

A school has closed in Edinburgh after a teenage pupil died on the grounds, police have confirmed.

Teachers called emergency services to Kaimes School in the Liberton area of the city on Tuesday.

Students were sent home shortly after noon after the 17-year-old pupil was treated by paramedics, but was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The school, which caters for those with complex needs on the autism spectrum, remained closed on Wednesday and is not expected to reopen this week.

Devastated carers told Edinburgh Live how the school community - which includes young learners from across the capital and beyond - had been left ‘shocked’ by the incident.

Police Scotland confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the boy’s passing, but said officers were following several lines of enquiry.

A spokeswoman added: “Around 11.30am on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, police responded to a concern for a person call at a school on Lasswade Road, Edinburgh.

“Medical assistance was provided by paramedics to a 17-year-old boy, however, he died at the scene.

“There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

Support is now being offered to pupils affected by the incident.

Amanda Hatton, executive director of education and children’s services at the City of Edinburgh Council, said: “I am absolutely saddened to hear this tragic news and my immediate thoughts are with the family.

"My heartfelt sympathies go out to the school community and everyone who has been affected.

"Support is being offered to any pupils or staff who may require it.”
