Edinburgh's Water of Leith pathway flooded after severe rain fall batters capital

A concerned Edinburgh resident has shared video footage of the Water of Leith at Stockbridge bursting its banks.

Heavy rain that has fallen overnight on Thursday December 29 and into the morning and afternoon of Friday 30 has caused chaos for residents in the capital and the Lothians.

The MET Office issued a yellow weather warning for Edinburgh and the Lothians and forecasted that areas should expect around 40-50mm of rain.

They say that this could lead to fast-flowing or deep floodwater that could cause danger to life.

And it appears as though the Water of Leith at Stockbridge has faced the full brunt of the heavy rainfall that has poured down on the capital.

David Glass captured video of the pathway along the nature trail being consumed by the rising water levels at 1:00pm this afternoon.

In the video he said: “So we are standing by the lovely walkway at the Water of Leith.

“The Water of Leith has officially burst its bank and flood defences have been put in place.

“It is pretty frightening really.”

The recent severe weather has been caused by a ‘US bomb cyclone’ and has led to trains being cancelled coming to and from Edinburgh stations.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has also warned drivers to take extra care as major roads have been closed due to excess water inundating surfaces.

Edinburgh bypass has also been closed to motorists and those trying to get to and from the capital have been warned to expect severe disruption.
