As the festive frenzy wears off, many animals that were gifted for Christmas are quickly becoming a real responsibility for owners.
And irrespective of the time of year, there are always loving dogs who are searching for a home to be loved and cared for in. And while many of us wish we could adopt all of these pets and spend our days taking care of them, work and real life often gets in the way.
Thousands of animals across Scotland are given up for a number of reasons, whether it be through financial struggle or just finding the time to take care of them. Charity Dogs Trust takes these pets in and gives them a temporary living space before they move on to their forever family.

But sadly, some dogs are forgotten about, and can spend months at the centres, waiting for someone to fall in love with them and take them home.
Below are two of Edinburgh's Dog Trusts longest residents, and what they need to live the rest of their lives happy and looked after.
Noah
Breed: Lurcher Cross
Sex: Male
Age: Three years old
Size: Large
May live with: Noah needs a home with no other pets or children.
Reference ID: 1245958
Noah's ideal home
Noah is a three-year-old lurcher dog that has been in the care of West Calder's Dogs Trust since April 2021. He is a handsome lad who stands out from the crowd with his blonde and fluffy long-haired coat. Noah is a friendly boy who adores his human friends.
He is very affectionate and will happily cuddle up next to you on the sofa to help keep you warm and cosy. Noah likes his food and would consider himself to be a real foodie, so as such, he will never say no to a biscuit or two.
As a young Lurcher, Noah is full of energy and would enjoy a large garden where he can play with his toys and run around freely. Noah is always excited to go for walks, but he doesn’t feel comfortable around other dogs so prefers to explore quiet areas.
He is good in the car and enjoys travelling to go on new adventures and have fun. Noah is looking for an adult only home, without pets.

Gregor
Breed: Shar Pei
Sex: Male
Age: Eight plus years old
Size: Medium
May live with: Secondary school age children
Reference ID: 1257238
Gregor's ideal home
Gregor is a sweet boy who enjoys his independence, he likes going on walks and snuggling up in a big comfy bed.
He is looking for a home where he will be the only pet and can be rehomed with children aged 16 and over. He has been in Dogs Trust care since May 2022.
Gregor is currently in the care of one of our foster carers where he has been receiving gold star reports. Gregor is very well mannered, housetrained and a delight to have in the home.
He can take time to get to know people but once he's built that bond, he will be a very loyal companion.
This lovely boy can be left for short periods of time and sleeps well at night in the comfort of his own cosy bed.
Gregor would love to have his own garden where he can potter around in and sunbathe in the summer.
