Edinburgh's best sandwiches as capital celebrates British Sandwich Week

It's British Sandwich Week and what better way to celebrate than by showcasing some of the very best sandwiches in our city. In Edinburgh, there's plenty to choose from.

Thankfully, when all else fails at lunchtime, you're likely within grabbing distance of a suitably stacked sandwich, one of the world's most ubiquitous of foods.

Of course they come in various shapes and sizes. Whether you prefer the standard two slices of bread and one flavour-packed filling, toastie, wrap, stacked, club, focaccia, ciabatta... the list is endless.

And thanks to the capital's fantastic food scene, there's a menu of brilliant sandwich options in every corner of the city.

We've picked out some of our favourite sandwich places for you to try.

Alby's, Leith

Ask a Leith local where they go for their sandwiches and Alby's will more often than not will be the immediate response.

Run by Natasha Ferguson and Matt Belcher, this place has a bit of a cult following on account of their huge sandwich fillings - calamari, beef short rib and spiced roasted cauliflower have all appeared on the menu, meaning there's something new to try every time you go.

Cafe Domenico, Leith

Another legendary Leith spot, Cafe Domenico gets a roaring trade on account of its big sandwiches oozing with flavour.

The legendary Cafe Domenico (Cafe Domenico / Facebook)

A fixture at The Shore for over 25 years, week after week they serve up the likes of The Big One - breaded chicken, bacon, Mexican cheese, guacamole, salsa, sour cream, peppers, jalapenos and nachos - and the classic Cheese and Ham Crunch - ham, cheddar, emmental, red onion, tomatoes, nachos and mayo.

Victor Hugo, various locations

An Edinburgh institution at the Meadows since 1969, this historic deli has been feeding locals with filling-packed sarnies for generations.

If you haven't yet been, we recommend the famous Grilled Pastrami on Rye. Victor Hugo also have venues in the city centre and at The Shore, meaning there's no excuse not to visit, wherever you are in the capital.

305 Cafe, Leith

We once shared a mouthwatering photo of 305 Cafe's salt beef grilled cheese sandwich on our Facebook page and received an overwhelming response to what can only be described as culinary art.

But that's not their only showstopper. For meat-free fans, you'll be drawn in by the Vegan Reuben, while if you're feeling a little naughty, their Mac and Cheese toastie is your calling.

Oink, various locations

As we recently reported, TripAdvisor ranks Oink as the city's best fast food place on account of its famous Hog Roast Rolls.

Many customers hail Oink as a 'must try' lunch destination, with Berwickshire farmers Adam Marshall and Sandy Pate achieving huge popularity after first bringing their delicious hog roasts to Edinburgh's Farmers Market way back in 2001.

King of Feasts @ Polwarth Tavern, Merchiston

Earlier this year, the Financial Times celebrated the Polwarth Tavern as being home to some of the the best sandwiches in the world, thanks to King of Feasts.

Creator Rob Casson's unique packed sandwiches, in the sub style, get inspiration from whatever he finds at the local butcher and greengrocer that week - bringing incredible results.

We recently put the revered sandwiches to the test, here (spoiler, they were good).

Chop House, various locations

If you're looking for big, meaty steak sandwiches, we've previously hailed The Chop House's sensational offering as 'looking like one of the greatest things on earth' - you can see our video here.

Complete with béarnaise, burnt onions and bonemarrow gravy on fresh sourdough, it's one you'll definitely need to book out at least 30 minutes for a lie down after you've finished.

Down The Hatch, City Centre and South Queensferry

It would be rude not to include everyone's favourite Canadians at Down The Hatch on our list. Prepare to spend a long time pouring over the menu to make the choice between their awesome poutine or one of their excellent Canada-inspired sandwiches.

We recommend The World Famous Beef Dip sando - thin shaved roast beef, swiss cheese, caramelised onions on a garlic butter toasted baguette, all ready for dipping into that deliciously salty Au Jus.

The Banh Mi Bar, city centre

You could easily argue the Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwich is one of the best of the world - and thankfully we can get our hands on some absolute beauts here in Edinburgh.

Served on a crusty bread roll with pate, pickled vegetables, meat such as pork, chillies and coriander, Banh Mi Bar team's brilliant Asian-inspired lunches have been a huge hit ever since they launched at The Arches.

Bross Bagels, various locations

We recently headed to Bross Bagels' new deli location at the St James Quarter and we get just why their beautiful bagel sandwiches are so popular across the capital.

Their inventive culinary creations include the likes of the Buffanono, 'containing deep fried cauliflower, buffalo sauce, melted jack cheese, Montreal slaw and Mama Bross' ranch sauce, but a neverending menu means you'll be scrambling around for your perfect combination.
