Edinburgh residents shocked by horror machete attack as police hunt masked gang

Edinburgh residents have told of their horror after a masked gang brutally attacked a man with machetes outside a quiet country pub.

A 20-year-old man was attacked by three men wearing dark clothes after he left the Ye Old Inn on Main Street, in the Davidson's Mains area of the city at around 12.05am on Friday, April 21. The attackers fled in a red saloon car.

The victim sustained serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment. Police confirmed they are treating the incident as attempted murder.

Shocked locals told Edinburgh Live that they had never seen an incident like this before in the usually quiet area.

One neighbour told Edinburgh Live: I’ve lived here around 20 years and there’s never been much trouble at all. I heard a lot of shouting just before midnight then the police knocked on my door this morning.“

Another said: “It’s such a shame that there were three of them out there waiting for him. We’ve lived here 45 years and there is trouble from time to time but never anything like that. I really hope he’s okay and they find out what happened.”

One resident, who saw officers setting up cordons this morning, said: “I was absolutely gobsmacked when I saw the police had cornered off the road this morning.”

Detective Inspector Kevin Tait said: “We are appealing for anyone who witnessed or has information on the incident to get in touch.

“I’d particularly ask anyone who was within the pub on Main Street yesterday evening (20 April) to come forward to help with our enquiries.

“Equally anyone who may have seen a red saloon car in the Davidson's Mains, or surrounding areas, or has information on this vehicle and its occupants, should contact officers as soon as possible. We are assessing available CCTV footage and anyone who may have dashcam of the incident, or vehicle, should provide this at your earliest opportunity.”

Anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to contact officers on 101 quoting incident 0010 of 21, April, 2023.

Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.
