Edinburgh residents set to gather for vigil in attempt to save beloved Gorgie Farm

A vigil has been organised to take place at Gorgie Farm tomorrow as members of the public rally to support the cause for a resolution to be found that can save the popular business.

Residents of the capital were devastated to hear that the Farm was set to close their doors and ever since there have been efforts to ensure the Gorgie family friendly site remains open.

A fortnight ago the operators behind the Farm, Love Learning, said that they would be forced to shut down due to the impact of the pandemic and the rising cost of living.

Not only does the business act as an educational setting for families and young people, it also is a vital community asset that has offered a foodbank for struggling locals in the area.

The vigil event has been organised by ‘Save Gorgie Farm Forever’ and has been described as a peaceful gathering of people who want to see the Farm remain an integral part of the West Edinburgh landscape.

The event will take place at 2:00pm and it is not yet known how many are planning on turning up to show their support.

A number of organisations have come forward to express an interest in taking over the running of Gorgie Farm - with Edinburgh Zoo understood to be amongst those looking to step in.

But a decision has still to be made, and Edinburgh City Council have said that it is looking to see if the animals can remain on site while the search continues for new owners.

Nonetheless, the farm is set to shut its doors on Monday.

On Wednesday January 11, council Cammy Day said that council officers would be meeting with interested organisations over the coming days to discuss their proposals.

He said earlier this week: “It’s really encouraging to have these organisations telling us they would be interested in taking over the running of Gorgie Farm. Obviously it is still very early in the process but we’ll be meeting with them over the coming days to hear exactly what they have to say and their ideas for the site.

“Everyone knows what a unique and much-loved community asset Gorgie Farm is and it was sad to hear Love Learning’s announcement last month that they are closing. There has been an outpouring of support expressed for the farm and willingness from community groups, the public and local politicians to help find a solution.

“Although it is scheduled to shut its doors to the public on Monday we’ll look to see if there is any way of keeping the animals on site until a decision is made on its future. I’ve held a positive meeting this afternoon with local politicians and agreed to keep them updated with developments over the coming days.”
