Edinburgh residents left without internet for days after cables 'slashed'

A number of Edinburgh residents have been left without internet for days after WiFi cables were slashed on several properties around Leith.

Locals have been disconnected for up to a week after a careless prankster cut the wires linking households to their broadband connections.

One resident first noticed she had no internet last Saturday but did not realise the wires outside her tenement flat had been severed until Thursday.

She then realised that could be the reason why and reported the vandalism to police straight away but couldn't get someone out to fix the WiFi until this Saturday.

They aren't the only ones as there have been several reports of wire cutting from community members in the Leith area, specifically around Bonnington, Great Junction Street and Newhaven.

The local resident who is now without internet said: "Basically today realised that someone has slashed our tenement internet cables, it seems someone has been going around slashing everyone’s cables from Bonnington to Lochend.

"It’s just so bizarre. I really don’t understand what’s to be gained."

She added: "The internet has been out in the flats at the front of our stair as far as I’m aware.

"I know it happened to a friends parent near Great Junction Street and of course all the people who commented on my thread saying the same happened to them!"

"I mean a lot of people are still working from home. I'm just glad my phone contract comes with lots of data."

Police have confirmed receiving reports of damage to wires and local officers are looking into incidents to find out more.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Around 3.55pm on Thursday, 27 January, officers received a report of damage to wires in Burns Place, Edinburgh and officers will look into this matter to establish more details."
