It is unclear if the problem is down to fly-tippers or the bins not being collected often enough, but residents are now concerned pests such as rats, seagulls and mice will gather in the area.
One resident who hit out at the mess, Anne Mather said: "I know others on this group have already posted about this disgusting mess at the foot of Coates Gardens, but this is what it is like this morning.
"Because of the barrier you have no choice but to walk through it, picking your way through food and now mice and gulls. "
She continued "It’s going to be seriously hot today, so imagine what this will be like later. And this is next to the Haymarket Hotel which has done a great job in making their buildings look attractive and welcoming for visitors.
"Come on City of Edinburgh’s cleaning department, this is not a third-world country, but this area currently looks like one!"
Scottish Conservative Councillor for the City Centre, Joanna Mowat said that she would be reporting the issue asking for the mess to be cleared up and to ensure that the bins are emptied regularly.
Edinburgh Council confirmed that the overflowing bins have been cleared up.
