Edinburgh residents astonished as water explodes onto nearby homes from tram works

Edinburgh residents have been left astonished as water gushed onto nearby homes on Leith Walk from the ongoing tram works site.

The two-metre high fountain sprayed from the road on Leith Walk next to Jane Street on Tuesday evening with powerful jets of water spraying onto the street and homes nearby.

A video shows strong jets of water exploding from the ground in the enclosed area of the major road where the current tram works are taking place.

Edinburgh Council confirmed work was being carried out "in conjunction with Scottish Water" with a planned interruption to the service while affected residents were notified in advance.

Residents passing the area were shocked to see such "a heavy gush" of water spraying onto the public street and said anyone walking past would have been soaked.

Freya Ingram who works nearby told Edinburgh Live: "I live at Newhaven Harbour but I work in the Scotmid at the bottom of Leith Walk opposite Mousetrap the pub.

"I finished work at 11pm and started walking down and nearly walked straight into it. The work men were all panicking and couldn’t turn it off for what I would say around ten minutes.

"It was scary at first when I saw how high it was but then seeing the men run around trying to fix it I just had a giggle to myself and crossed the road to walk down Leith Walk."

Dozens of shocked locals reacted to the video with many now understanding why their water had been turned off despite Edinburgh council saying letters telling residents this were distributed.

While many made light of the obscure situation, one resident joked: "That's a great way to clean your windows."

Another said: "Hope the folk on the left don’t have their windows open."

One local added: "Imagine waking up and thinking your being waterboarded."
