Edinburgh Red Arrows flypast scrapped at short notice due to weather as locals distraught

Edinburgh locals were left gutted after clouds over the city prevented the Red Arrows from putting on a show on Friday evening.

Residents were due to gather in anticipation of catching a rear glimpse of the famous military jets, with the fleet due to fly over Edinburgh Castle and parts of East and West Lothian, before landing at Edinburgh Airport.

Due to oversee the Tattoo around 9pm on Friday, August 12, RAF Scotland informed locals via social media that due to the clouds that had fallen over the city, the jets could no longer take off.

They said "Sadly, it looks as though the haar (cloud cover essentially…) will prevent the Red Arrows from overflying the city this evening. Sorry!"

Users on Twitter were left distraught after hearing the news. One hit out, saying: "Could ye no have let us ken this about an hour ago?" Another commented: "Reading this nine mins after they were due!"

Earlier on Friday, temperatures sat at a toasty 20C+, however a looming series of clouds had thrown a blanket over the city in the late afternoon, making it nearly impossible to spot the Red Arrows flypast.

A schedule had been released by the RAF, detailing the exact minute the jets would be visible above the city, but residents would have to have been quick. Taking off from their RAF Scrampton base, the aerobatic display team have confirmed they would not have been pulling any stunts during the flypast, but would have remained in their tight formation, making for a fantastic photo opportunity.

Unfortunately, the typical Scottish weather has struck again and locals will be left awaiting the next opportunity to snap a rare picture of the iconic fleet of fighter jets.
