Edinburgh pub once owned by Hibs legend reprimanded for illegal match streaming

An Edinburgh pub called Fox's Bar - which was once owned by late Hibernian legend Eddie Turnbull - have lost an injunction against Scottish football bosses.

The injunction will ban the pub from showing cinch Premiership matches without a Sky agreement, reports the Scottish Daily Express.

Chief executive of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL), Neil Doncaster, has welcomed the new verdict - and hit out at "license-dodgers".

Fox's Bar are also required to pay the SPFL's legal costs and fund notices that advertised the order in the local press.

The current tenant of the Leith pub in Bonnington Road is Debz & John Ltd and the premises manager is John Pearson. However, many fans will remember the days when Hibernian legend Eddie Turnbull was the licensee.

Neil Doncaster said: "Today's announcement underlines the effectiveness of our nationwide detection and enforcement campaign, which tracks down those who try to dodge their responsibilities, by showing our games without paying for them.

"Working together with our partners at Sky, we are relentless in pursuing legal action against those who seek to show SPFL games without the proper licenses in place.

"The overwhelming majority of responsible licensees recognise the enormous benefits of showing our games on their premises and do the right thing by paying for the privilege.

"It's entirely unfair to them if others are allowed to get away without paying and today’s announcement underlines our determination to track down the license-dodgers and make them pay."

During the 2022/23 season, the SPFL had raised a whole host of court actions in the Court of Session - situated in Edinburgh. These actions were brought against licensees who were showing live matches without a license.

Eddie Turnbull was a part of the Hibernian Famous Five front line, alongside Gordon Smith, Bobby Johnstone, Lawrie Reilly, and Willie Ormond. These legendary players spear-headed Hibs to three league titles in the late 1940's and 1950's.

Eddie later became the manager of Hibernian, but retired back in 1980 after falling out with chairman Tom Hart over the decision to sign George Best. He then opened 'ETs' Bar on Easter Road, before moving to Fox's Bar.

Eddie passed away in 2011 and was posthumously awarded an Arctic Star military medal for his Royal Navy service during the Second World War.
