Edinburgh police scrambled as suspected grenade pulled from the Union Canal

Edinburgh police were called this morning to remove a possible explosive device found by magnet fishers from Union Canal - the street was cornered off for public safety.

Emergency services raced to Yeaman Place in Edinburgh after 12pm today after a group from Magnet Fishers of Edinburgh fished out the suspected explosive device.

Andrew Dunlop, 26, fished the object out of the Union Canal with pals Scott Linton and Cameron Squires.

The trio waited at the scene waiting to find out exactly what the device is as the bomb squad plan to take it away for further testing.

He told the Record : "We were out magnet fishing at the Scottish Union Canal near Gilmour Street and what I pulled out of the water looks like a grenade.

"We're not 100 per cent sure yet but the guys are out looking at it just now.

"It doesn't look like anything I've ever seen. After I pulled it out I was like we need to phone the police, we can't just put it to the side and leave it.

"We have been told the water used to be used for transporting weapons so it might well be a grenade. It could be from World War Two if anything.

"They need to X-ray it and then they can tell you if it is or not. If it is they'l take it away to be destroyed."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police received report of a possible unexploded ordnance found in the Union Canal in Edinburgh around 12.15pm on Friday, 21 January, 2022.

“Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) attended and removed the item. There is no risk to the wider public.”
