Edinburgh police in crack down on dangerous drivers at Leith Walk junction

Police deployed officers over the weekend to tackle dangerous driving at a new junction on Leith Walk.

The Brunswick Road junction was branded a risk to pedestrians last week as cars were caught on video driving through a green man light.

Community backlash has prompted a stronger police presence to carry out traffic enforcement. Over the weekend, Edinburgh North East Police revealed what they were doing to respond to complaints.

Footage was uploaded to Twitter of drivers behaving aggressively and abusively towards a local resident acting on his own to deter the drivers from wrongfully turning off Elm Row onto Brunswick Road.

The light cycle was changed on Friday to make it safer for pedestrians. Trams to Newhaven said an all-stop pedestrian phase will be added at the junction and temporary traffic lights were put in place while permanent signals are reconfigured from today.

Edinburgh North East Police have also stepped up their community presence and response to the ongoing situation. On Thursday, Edinburgh North East Police had officers at the junction taking enforcement action at the junction.

“A number drivers have been reported for contravening no right and no left turn signage,” they said.

On Sunday, officers were once again on Leith Walk to conduct traffic enforcement and community engagement in response to community complaints at Brunswick Road Junction.

“NECPT and NEST officers responding to community complaints have continued to conduct enforcement action in relation to vehicles contravening no left and no right signage at Leith Walk / Brunswick Road. A number of drivers have been reported,” North East Police Tweeted.
