Edinburgh passengers face rail chaos after LNER halt services due to gas leak

Train passengers hoping to go from Edinburgh to Dundee or Aberdeen are facing rail chaos after several services were cancelled.

A gas leak at Carnoustie has led to LNER halting their services at Edinburgh and Newcastle with replacement buses being organised for commuters. LNER say that a gas leak near the railway means that the 10:00am London Kings X to Aberdeen would be terminated at Newcastle.

From there, customers should travel on the 1.43pm from Newcastle to Edinburgh. They have added that a rail replacement will depart Edinburgh at 1.30pm which will transport travellers to Aberdeen by using a Parks of Hamilton bus.

If travellers are looking to go onto Dundee, Arbroath, Montrose, Stonehaven or Aberdeen they can use their ticket on Bay Travel. They added that travellers could alternatively use the 2pm service travelling from London Kings X to Aberdeen.

LNER said: “We are sorry for the inconvenience caused to your journey today.”

ScotRail added that the ruptured gas main near the railway at Carnoustie had meant that they were unable to run services between Dundee and Montrose. They said that their Edinburgh and Glasgow trains to Aberdeen would only run between the two cities and Dundee.

They also stated that bus replacement services would be provided at Dundee for travel impacted by the gas leak. Police had shut down the Links Parade in Carnoustie, Angus, last night (February 1) after the Scottish Gas Networks (SGN) had reported damages to the network by a third party.

Roads were closed near to the site of the leak shortly before 6:30pm and two residential properties as well as the Carnoustie Sports Centre were evacuated as the public were urged to avoid the area. SGN engineers remained on site more than 12 hours later.

It is understood that the ruptured gas main was found near to the East Coast rail line and Network Rail have said that the line via Carnoustie will remain closed until it is safe to reopen. A 50-metre exclusion zone is in place around the site.

Network Rail tweeted: "The East Coast Line through Carnoustie remains closed due to a burst gas main. The affected pipework isn't part of our infrastructure, however, the railway falls within a safety exclusion zone."

A spokesperson for SGN said: "Our engineers are on site in Taymouth Street following third party damage to our gas main. To ensure everyone's safety, Taymouth Street is currently closed in both directions, and a diversion route for motorists is in place.

"The nearby railway line has also been closed, and travellers will be required to use a replacement bus service. We understand the inconvenience this is causing and our team is working as hard as possible to complete repairs to our gas network."
