Edinburgh park overrun with mice with locals spotting a 'gang of six' in the glasshouses

Scores of mice have been spotted roaming around an Edinburgh park - with one horrified photographer spotting 'six at a time' in the glasshouses.

Saughton Gardens, a well-used outdoor space to the west of the city, boasts well-maintained grounds, sports pitches, a play park and facilities for athletics.

But now residents are warning the area is becoming overrun with vermin.

Mhairi Chambers, a retiree and keen photographer, says she has been noticing the mice on her regular visits for the past three months.

The 66-year-old, who lives in Bruntsfield, shared the pictures on Facebook.

She told Edinburgh Live: “I was passing one day and as a keen amateur photographer and I happen to look into the glass house window. I noticed there was two or three mice running about which is surprising.”

“I was there yesterday about half-past twelve and went to the fishpond and as soon as I stepped in the door, I could see half a dozen mice. They were very visible running across the path and along the fishpond.”

“I know the weather is cold and they will come from outside but there seems to be a lot more of them since a couple of months ago.”

Like many people, Mhairi uses Saughton Gardens to enjoy the outdoors and take pictures of wildlife. She started to use the gardens in lockdown and is usually there once or twice a week in good weather.

Saughton Gardens is known to for its wildlife such as otters, birds, bees and amazing flowers with many people travelling from Edinburgh and the surrounding areas to see.

Rodents like mice and rats can spread disease to other humans through handling the animals and other means of contact which can seriously affect the environments that they encounter.

The City of Edinburgh Council has been approached for comment.
