Edinburgh offices could be turned into new cafe on Portobello High Street

An application to the City of Edinburgh Council to turn an estate agent's office into a new cafe is moving forward as residents of the neighbouring buildings get notified of the plans.

The new cafe is proposed to take residence at 229 Portobello High Street, currently occupied by Annan Solicitors & Estate Agents.

With the initial application submitted earlier this month, August 4, the process has now moved forward, with the occupants of further 51 addresses in the area receiving the corresponding notification this week.

The application proposes an open-plan sitting area with a pay point at the front of the shop. It is also stated that no cooking will be done on the premises, specifying that the place will serve cold foods.

Annan Solicitors & Estate Agents have resided at the property on the highly desirable Portobello street since December 2006.

Last year, in 2021, a proposal was submitted to combine the office spot with the neighbouring Carlos Takeaway venue and - with relevant alterations - form a space for a new restaurant. This application, however, was refused in June 2021 after facing objections from the locals.

As the current application is still in consideration, you can express your opinion on the proposal here.
