Edinburgh mum 'disgusted' as asbestos warning sign appears on council flat door

An Edinburgh mum has spoken of her concerns after an asbestos warning sign appeared at her old flat.

Lisa Wright lived in the Westburn Grove property with her husband and autistic 13-year-old son until four-weeks ago when they moved to a housing association property following several floods coming from her upstairs neighbour.

The ‘raging’ mum says that Edinburgh City Council carried out several repair works in her bathroom and although they warned her there may be asbestos, she claims they later told her she had nothing to worry about.

But she said that she was angered when a neighbour sent her a picture of her old front door covered in asbestos warning signs that said removal work was being carried out.

She alleges the council misled her and that there is a worry that the asbestos was disturbed during repair works as the family resided in the home.

“We recently had to move because the flat we stay in is only a one bed and it was continuously being flooded,” Lisa said.

“We had been waiting a while but we got bumped up the list due to the flooding from our upstairs neighbour that caused a lot of damage to our bathroom ceiling.

“We were told that there was no asbestos in the property at first before workers said there may be a little bit in the bathroom that they were repairing.

“But after they completed the work they said there was nothing to worry about and that they did not find anything.

“I was disgusted when I saw the picture from my old neighbour showing the asbestos caution signs on our old front door - I feel as though we have been lied to.

“I am raging, absolutely raging.

“We had unexplained coughs and colds and things you associate with weather but this put a lot into perspective, of course it could have been the damp, but you never know.

“We were offered temporary accommodation due to the flooding but my son is autistic and the change would not have gone down well so we had to stay.

“My fear is that the asbestos has been disturbed during the repairs and that we have been exposed to dangerous toxins.

“Neighbours from our old block are getting in touch saying they are scared that the whole building is riddled with it.”

A Council spokesperson said: “We’re sorry that this household experienced issues with flooding when they were Council tenants.

“Our contractors are currently carrying out repairs to the vacant property.

“We take the health and wellbeing of our tenants and contractors very seriously and appropriate measures regarding the management and removal of asbestos are taken at all times.”
