Edinburgh model who murdered gangster boyfriend out of jail for brother's funeral

Killer Edinburgh model Caroline Igoe was let out of jail on Friday to attend her brother's funeral in the capital.

The 45-year-old is serving a life sentence over the killing of her gangster boyfriend Martyn Barclay who she shot with his own gun in the capital's Inch area in 2009.

Following the passing of Caroline's brother Paul, who was also jailed following Barclay's death for hiding the murder weapon at Craigmillar Castle, she was pictured at St John Vianneys Church on Friday.

Paul Igoe passed away in hospital last month, reports the Record. A white Ford Transit people carrier with blacked out windows was seen transporting Caroline to the ceremony.

She was flanked by two female prison guards and remained handcuffed to one throughout the 10.30am service. They then headed to the nearby Mount Vernon cemetery, at around noon, where he was laid to rest.

A source said: "Caroline and Paul had their differences over the years, not least around Barclay's murder. She famously screamed her head off at him in the dock when she was jailed for life for Martyn's murder.

"But they loved each other and had a good relationship. She's obviously gutted he passed away but she's pleased she got to go and pay her respects.

"The death of a close family member is obviously tough to take at any time but it's even more difficult when you're in prison and away from your loved ones.

"Being able to spend time with them today and all grieve together will have meant the world to her."

When Paul was jailed for six years for helping Caroline cover up the murder of Barclay, she "screamed like a banshee." The mother-of-four also threatened to kill herself when caged.

She also said he should have "taken the rap" for shooting Martyn, 26, with a single shot from his own handgun outside her home in Edinburgh's Inch area.

Caroline gunned down Barclay on January 17, 2009, after he had been out all night drinking with pals. She then called her brother who raced to the scene and fled with the handgun which Barclay left by his bed.

Detectives in Edinburgh thought his death could be connected with a turf war dispute in the capital, but the weapon was later found and cops cracked the case.

Caroline claimed she had nothing to do with the killing, setting up a web page in his memory and calling him "my angel". She also lied to the Record that she had been left "devastated" by his death and "been through hell".

But the truth came out during the police probe and she was told she would have to serve a minimum of 20 years for the killing.

Barclay, who had been a keen footballer and boxer, had split from his long-term partner in summer 2008 and turned to drink and drugs.

He then started a relationship with former hairdresser Igoe, and soon moved into her home in the city's Inch area.

Grieving family members paid tribute to Paul on social media after his death, with one describing him as "the best guy ever".
