Edinburgh married couple compete annually in Halloween pumpkin carving challenge

Everyone enjoys a bit of friendly competition, whether it is with your siblings, friends or in this case, your spouse.

Husband and wife duo, Michael McGinney, 31, and Abi McGinney, 32, from Cammo, have competed against one another to see who can carve the best pumpkin for every Halloween since they became a couple.

They have gone head to head six times with Abi coming out on top with a four-one lead over her creative partner.

But the comeback could be on with Michael looking as though he will claw it back to a two pumpkin deficit with a devilishly Disney villain design.

Each year they set a theme, the first year was a straightforward creepy pumpkin design; the second year the couple were going to Cancun so decided to go for a Festival of the Dead feel; the third year was Halloween horror related; the fourth year was scary film characters; the fifth was the year of their wedding and Covid; and this year saw the pair design Disney villains.

Traditionally the designs will be shared on Facebook by the couple, with the public being asked to judge their favourite carving by either sharing an emoji or commenting a specific word to vote for the spooktacularly carved pumpkins.

This year however they added Instagram into the mix to widen their reach and it seems as though Michael’s Ursula is going to come out on top.

On their friendly yet heated annual competition between the chartered accountants, Abi said: “My husband and I have competed every year since we met. We are both quite competitive.

“It has become so popular that people begin to message us to ask when we are doing the competition.

“We took a year off last year because of our wedding and the house move but we are back with a bang this Halloween.

“We pick a theme each year then choose our own design to do. We then give words or ask for people to share an interaction that shows what way they are voting.

“I’ve gone four-one up but it looks like Michael might win this year, even though mine was way more tricky and intricate…as you can tell I’m not competitive at all!

“There is no guarantee that we will be able to continue it next year with a baby on the way but we will keep everyone posted.”
