Edinburgh locals send Boris Johnson a message after no confidence vote

As the Partygate scandal continues, Boris Johnson has recently managed to survive a vote of no confidence with 211 votes to 148.

Among the rebels included a number of Scottish Conservatives, including party leader Douglas Ross, borders MP John Lamont and Scottish Secretary Alister Jack.

In light of all this, we spoke to a number of Edinburgh locals to see how they feel about the recent vote of no confidence and the prospect of a nearby snap election.

Scott Anderson, 48, said: “It was about time I was wondering when [the no confidence vote] was going to happen. I think it was inevitable and the result was inevitable as well but hopefully it will spell the beginning of the end.

“I think there are a lot of MPs who have their own agenda, trying to keep their own jobs. I understand that they think it’s not the right time for a new leader. I think that’s why they voted the way they did.

“I think there should be a snap election. I think Boris Johnson has been proven not to be trusted and I think it’s about time that people had their say rather than being kept in office by conservative MPs who have a vested interest.

“I’m not somebody that’s overly political but the nature of what’s happened is damaging. It’s a bit worrying that you can’t trust the people who are in charge anymore.”

Annie Scanlan said: “I think it was to be expected. A lot of constituents were getting fairly fed up with the continual lying. It’s not just about the parties. There have been lots of things where he has either lied or been a wee bit creative with the truth.

“I think the predictions were that he was going to be successful but what’s really worrying a lot of the conservative MPs is the idea that if it’s not him, then who do we replace him with? There doesn’t seem to be an obvious runner so I think they’re a bit concerned.

“I think there area lot of very disgruntled voters out there and they feel like they’re not being heard and that everything is swept under the carpet. This whole business of “let’s get over it is all very well unless your granny or your mother was in a care home and you hadn’t seen them for six months and then they died.

“I think a lot of people are beginning to realise that he’s a bit of a campaigner but when it actually gets to the real work, I don’t think he’s got it.”

Connor Strachan, 29, said: “I am surprised that it [the no confidence vote] didn't pass through to be honest. I think it’s sort of the beginning of the end.

“Depending on how things go with Boris, if he were to step down from leadership then I think there should be a snap election.”

Jaqueline Creerer said: “In my opinion he got too many votes anyway to stay in parliament. I knew it would be close, he’s always going to have supporters.

“I do think there should be another snap election. It’s definitely damaging my faith in the current government.”
