Edinburgh locals fume as feckless fly tippers turn their street into a dump

Flytipping in the Granton community is causing residents grief as they demand that the council take action on the problem.

Local resident Julie Carpenter says the issue is blighting Granton Crescent at a set of communal bins. She adds that residents of the street are “sick to death” of not being able to use their own bins due to fly tipping.

She says that after they are emptied, people from outside the community come in their cars and dump rubbish and items at the communal site. This is also leading to an overflow of rubbish on pavements and roads.

Residents on the street worry that the area will soon become overrun with rats and vermin. Julie also adds that the community feels as though they are abandoned by Edinburgh City Council.

Julie said: “The residents of Granton Crescent are sick to death of not being able to use their own communal bins that the council provided some time ago. Immediately after they are emptied people from an unknown address come with car loads and fill the bins back up, also leaving what they can’t get in the bin on the pavement & roads.

“This encourages rats and seagulls and is also a total eyesore. The council are just not interested in doing anything about it.”

In images shared with Edinburgh Live, several furniture items including a mattress and elements of a wardrobe and a sofa appear to have been dumped at the bins. The debris from the overflowing bins and the fly tipped items can also be seen blocking the public pathway.

The bins are visibly bulging with litter and this is said to be a regular occurrence. There are fears that those with mobility issues will also struggle to get past the rubbish.

A council spokesperson said: “Bulk items will be uplifted. There is no evidence to suggest where these items came from or the fill rate of the container.

“The Area Supervisor will check this location and take any remedial action to ensure standards are being maintained where possible.”
