Edinburgh locals baffled over tiny cycle lane on Leith Walk

Edinburgh locals have been left baffled over a tiny cycle lane painted on Leith Walk near the Duke Street Junction on February 2.

The red-painted lane for cyclists is a new addition to Leith Walk and is located at the corner at the foot of the walk, where you turn from Duke Street onto Leith Walk.

It is one of many changes getting put onto the main street as the Leith to Newhaven Trams project comes into its final stages.

Edinburgh Council have said the cycle lane is currently not in use and this will not be the final design of the cycle lane.

Local resident, Euan Hamilton spotted the cycle paths and shared them on Twitter writing: "cycle lanes, Edinburgh style."

He told Edinburgh Live: "I would love to cycle round the city but without proper segregation, I won’t take the risk. I walk or get the bus everywhere."

A spokesperson for the City of Edinburgh Council said: " The whole cycleway remains closed as it is under construction and there are also ongoing works around this junction – this is not the final layout for the cycleway."

The council announced on Friday, February 3 that this month will see two-way traffic will return to Leith Walk by the end of February as preparations for tram testing on the new line begins.

North- and southbound traffic along the length of Leith Walk will be reintroduced from February 13, followed by the electrification of the full line.

The energisation of the line will allow for testing to begin, with the first test trams expected on the route at the beginning of March. Final track preparations will also take place in the lead-up to the first test tram running.

All tram track, overhead line poles and communications and power ducting have been installed and the final section at Picardy Place is being installed over the next two weeks.
