Edinburgh leisure centre evacuated after lit firework thrown into lobby

Leisure centre staff in Drum Brae were forced to evacuate the building after an individual threw a lit firework into the lobby of the building.

Thankfully no one was injured during the incident that took place shortly before 9pm on October 31 but Edinburgh Leisure have condemned the “reckless” actions of the perpetrator.

Both Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) raced to the scene after the fire alarm of the building was set off by the firework.

Officers say that enquiries are ongoing into the incident.

An Edinburgh Leisure spokesperson said: "We can confirm that a firework was set off inside Drumbrae Leisure Centre, just before 9:00pm on October 31 2022. As a result, the fire alarm was activated, and all customers were taken to the assembly point.

“Thankfully, no-one was hurt but this is a reckless act by an individual, not thinking about the potential consequences that might have occurred. Fortunately, on this occasion no-one was hurt.

“The fire brigade and police attended the site and are now investigating the incident.”

In an image shared with Edinburgh Live, a fire appliance can be seen outside of Drum Brae Leisure centre.

Graham McAslan, who shared the image on Twitter, asked: “Is it not time to ban the sales of fireworks to the public? Some bright spark lobbed a banger into the entrance to Drumbrae Leisure Centre last night.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 8:55 pm on Monday October 31 2022, police received a report of a firework being thrown into the Drum Brae Leisure Centre building at Drum Brae Terrace, Edinburgh.

"There was no-one injured and enquiries are ongoing."

A SFRS spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 8.03pm on Monday, October 31 to reports of fireworks being set off within a leisure centre at Drum Brae Terrace, Edinburgh.

"Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene to make the area safe. There were no reported casualties.”
