An Edinburgh John Lewis customer has said that they were “depressed” after buying a sad looking cheese toastie from the retail giant’s café for £5.25.
Joanna Pauley, had come to the café in St James Quarter with her mother for a spot of lunch and decided to order the simple but effective cheese snack.
But she was aghast to discover that the till had rung up £5.25 for what she described as just two slices of bread with a smattering of cheese.

She said that she could only stomach half of the toastie as it had left her feeling “depressed” and “robbed.”
The 45-year-old said: “You can tell that the cost of living crisis is even impacting John Lewis. They charged me £5.25 for a cheese toastie which was made up of nothing else but the two slices of bread and a smattering of cheese.
“When I wrote to complain I was told I should have ordered a side salad to go along with it. I was there with my mother and we both agreed that it was very sparse and measly. I actually only ate half as I felt depressed eating it and felt robbed!
“As somewhere that is related to Waitrose I would expect a bit of garnish, maybe a bit of coleslaw and some crisps but that was so mean and bare looking - two slices of bread with a bit of cheese is about 95 per cent profit for them on that!”
John Lewis say that there is traditionally a side salad available with the toastie and added that they were sorry to hear the feedback.
A John Lewis spokesperson said: "We're really sorry to hear Ms Pauley's feedback, and will continue to work hard on providing delicious food at great value.
“The sandwich mentioned is just one item on offer - and we sell a wide range of options, with hot meals from under £5."
