THE organisers of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay have issued an update as a new series of weather warnings have been issued.
Organisers of the famed street party held a meeting on Sunday to discuss the event on the 31st amid a series of yellow warnings from the Met Office.
A new yellow warning for wind across the central belt and other parts of Scotland will be in place from Monday until 11pm on Hogmanay, while snow and rain warnings will remain in place from Monday until the bells.
Previously, First Minister John Swinney urged people to “pay close attention” to the weather warnings in place throughout the Hogmanay period.
In the latest update, organisers of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay have confirmed that the event is still planned to go ahead, with preparations “well under way”.
However, a spokesperson has since confirmed the torchlight procession due to take place later on Sunday evening has been cancelled due to strong winds.
Further updates on the rest of the celebrations are expected to be given on Monday.
The popular event sees tens of thousands of people flock to the capital to celebrate the new year with live music and fireworks.
Organisers encouraged revellers to dress appropriately for the outdoors and to check weather forecasts for the latest conditions.
A spokesperson for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay said: “Current forecasts show more favourable conditions on December 31 for the world famous Street Party and Midnight Fireworks here in Edinburgh, and we are looking forward to welcoming thousands of people from around the world to join us as we celebrate the start of a New Year with friends old and new.
“Ahead of the big night there are some unsettled periods of weather and we are working round the clock to ensure event preparations and contingency plans are in place for the big night.
“With the Concert in the Gardens arena already in place, and an early installation of the crucial fireworks at Edinburgh Castle, preparations are well under way.
“As always in Scotland the forecasts are changing regularly and those attending events over the next few days are advised to stay up-to-date by following our social channels and the Met Office.
“A lot of our events are outdoors, so make sure you dress appropriately in warm and waterproof gear.
“We’re excited to welcome you all to the wide range of events and comings together that make Edinburgh the world’s Home of Hogmanay.”
